Doxycycline (brand names: Vibramycin®, Oracea®, Monodox®, Periostat®, Doryx®, Acticlate®) is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat certain infections in small animals, such as anaplasma (a tick-borne disease), heartworm disease, and periodontal (teeth and gum) disease.
Doxycycline has been used to (presumably) rid the parasite of Wolbachia organisms; therefore, D immitis organisms do not thrive, may deteriorate and die, and have reduced reproductive potential, which helps manage HWD in infected dogs and reduces potential for infection in other dogs.
Because doxycycline can eliminate Wolbachia and reduce inflammation and PTEs, it should be used whenever possible in the treatment of heartworm-infected animals. Don’t let a heartworm-positive dog leave the clinic without it.
