Hook was tonally flawed, rushed, and way too big for it's own good. If the movie could have been shot on-location on an island somewhere, it could have blossomed into something more memorable, like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Dec 11, 1991 · The crucial failure in "Hook" is its inability to re-imagine the material, to find something new, fresh or urgent to do with the Peter Pan myth. Lacking that, Spielberg should simply have remade the original story, straight, for this generation.
A movie that seamlessly appeals to both kids and adults is a family movie. The complaint here is that there are two separate movies, one for kids and one for adults, mashed together. The kids will be bored for half and the adults will be bored for the other half.
