Sep 19, 2013 · Over 70 years ago in May 1933, in a vote conducted by the Hampton Script, students selected “Pirates” as the official mascot of Hampton. It was a pretty tough competition with competitors such as: Seasiders, Ironmen, Buccaneers and Wildcats.

- UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS. Rameses is both the costumed and live ram mascot for the school. In 1924, the school's head cheerleader was inspired by star player Jack Merrit’s nickname, the “Battering Ram,” and convinced the powers that be to give him $25 to pay for Rameses.

The Hampton Pirates and Lady Pirates refer to the sports teams representing Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia in intercollegiate athletics. The Pirates and Lady Pirates compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Coastal Athletic Association.
Dr. William R. Harvey served as the 12 th President of Hampton University. A native of Brewton, Alabama, he is a graduate of Southern Normal High School, Talladega College and Virginia State University. He earned his doctorate in College Administration from Harvard University in 1972.
