The Oneida Indian Nation (OIN) or Oneida Nation (/ oʊ ˈ n aɪ d ə / oh-NYE-də // ⓘ) is a federally recognized tribe of Oneida people in the United States. The tribe is headquartered in Verona, New York, where the tribe originated and held territory prior to European colonialism, and continues to hold territory today.
The Wisconsin Oneida are an Iroquoian-speaking Indian tribe currently residing on a reservation in northeastern Wisconsin near Green Bay. They originally came from upstate New York. The Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora make up the Six Nations League of the Iroquois.
The main Oneida village was burned by the French in 1696, and the French also established a small military force at Onondaga in 1711. Following the Tuscarora Wars (1711-13), a number of Tuscarora joined the Oneida.
