Nag-aral siya ng elementarya sa Pribadong Paaralan ni Roman Velez sa Bacolor at ng sekundarya sa Paaralang Publiko ng San Fernando. Noong 1904 ay ipinadala si Jose bilang pensionado sa Amerika.

The Japanese, knowing the high position their prisoner occupied in the Commonwealth Government, ordered him to collaborate with them. Abad Santos refused. On May 2, 1942, he was executed.
