  5. Luton is a large town in Bedfordshire, some 35 mi (56 km) north of London. It's a multicultural town with a population of about 200,000. It used to have a straw and hat-making trade, hence "The Hatters" nickname of Luton football club; a couple of factories remain along the Old Bedford Road.

    • Stockwood Park. This 100-hectare park is at Luton’s southern limits is a former country estate. Stockwood House (1740) was pulled down in the 1960s, and its stables and walled gardens now host the Stockwood Discovery Centre, developed with finance from the Heritage Lottery Fund and which we’ll cover below.
