The Battle of Munfordville (also known as the Battle of Green River) was an engagement in Munfordville, Kentucky during the American Civil War. Victory there allowed the Confederates to temporarily strengthen their hold on the region and impair Union supply lines.

Hart County, KY | Sep 14 - 17, 1862. In the summer of 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg ’s army invaded Kentucky and attacked the Union garrison at Munfordville. After a three-day siege, Bragg’s army captured the garrison and its 4,000 defenders. This battle set the scene for the Battle of Perryville, which occurred on October 8, 1862.

Sep 14, 2017 · After viewing the Rebel positions, Wilder surrendered his garrison of 4,000 men on September 17. Rather than confront Buell, Bragg decided to move on, burning the railroad bridge behind them. Bragg would meet Buell in the decisive battle at Perryville three weeks later.

Union forces commanded by Colonel Wilder surrendered to Mississippi regiments of General Bragg's army on September 17, 1862, following battle on the 14th. 50 killed and 307 wounded. Bragg evacuated Munfordville on 20th before General Buell's forces arrived.
