Below the executives list, in order, you may have senior managers, middle managers, supervisors and groups of employees like specialists, associates and assistants.In a larger organization, the hierarchical chart likely spans widely in order to cover all the departments, and hierarchies within those departments, that exist at the company.

    Flat structure

    Within a flat or horizontal chart, there is less of a vertical hierarchy because the middle management positions usually don't exist. The flat structure is common for companies that want to provide a level of autonomy, creative control and empowerment to its employees.For example, a small advertising agency may use the flat structure for their organizational chart where the CEO appears at the top of the chart followed by a couple of managers and their respective employees. In this example, there may be one manager who's in charge of online advertising on websites and social media pages and another who manages more traditional advertising like billboards, magazines and other signage. Their employees may include graphic designers, materials coordinators, events personnel, social media specialists, videographers and more.

    Matrix structure

    A matrix organizational structure can be a little more complicated compared to the other two, but it also helps enhance the communication between departments and individual employees who may be working on a project together. In a matrix structure, one employee may report to multiple managers depending on the status updates they need to provide.For example, a sales representative will likely report to a sales manager and discuss their sales quota and any other pertinent performance information. However, this same sales professional may focus on selling credit card accounts in a given month and later need to report any common customer concerns or questions to the director of lending.
