A film people wanted, it got made, cost $40million and only made $25million. Just to be "that guy" for a bit, technically it cost $39 million on a $40 million budget (Joss was very efficient with money), and while it made $25M domestically, it made another $15 internationally, for a total worldwide gross of $40 million.
Judging the success of a movie based on how it does for a few weeks in an antiquated delivery of movies leads to green lighting tons of crap that does exceptionally well for a few weeks (e.g., the super hero craze right now) that doesn't create timeless movies.
