Tioga County was formed on March 26, 1804 from parts of Lycoming County. The name, derived from an Native American word meaning "the forks of a stream", honors the Tioga River. Wellsboro, the county seat, lies just 12 miles east of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, one of state’s most spectacular natural attractions.

Tioga, county, northern Pennsylvania, U.S., bordered by New York state to the north and Lycoming Creek to the southeast. It consists of a mountainous region on the Allegheny Plateau. The principal waterways are the Cowanesque and Tioga rivers and Crooked, Pine, and Babb creeks, as well as Hammond, Tioga, and Cowanesque lakes.
