    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDs. NSAIDs are most effective for mild to moderate pain that occurs with swelling and inflammation. These medications are commonly used for arthritis and pain resulting from muscle sprains, strains, back and neck injuries, or menstrual cramps.
    • Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is usually recommended as a first line treatment for mild to moderate pain. It might be taken for pain due to a skin injury, headache, or conditions that affect the muscles and bones.
    • COX-2 inhibitors. COX-2 inhibitors are another type of NSAID. These medications were developed with the aim of reducing the common side effects of traditional NSAIDs.
    • Antidepressants and anti-seizure medications. Some medications commonly prescribed to manage depression and prevent epileptic seizures have been found to help relieve chronic pain.
    • Acetaminophen. Also known as paracetamol (brand name Tylenol) around the world, acetaminophen’s exact method of pain reduction isn’t well understood. It’s sometimes classified as a COX inhibitor because part of its known function is blocking, or inhibiting, cyclooxygenase (COX).
    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) NSAIDs are true COX inhibitors. They work by inhibiting COX-1 or COX-2 enzymes (or both). In this way, they block pain perception, but they also help decrease inflammation.
    • Topical products. Topical OTC products are commonly used as supplements to other forms of long-term pain management, helping when the pain feels extra intense.
