The 4th Infantry Division deployed from Fort Lewis to Camp Enari, Pleiku, Vietnam on 25 September 1966 (The 2nd Brigade actually deployed on 21 July and arrived in Vietnam on August 2nd aboard the Nelson M Walker and was flown to Pleiku) and served more than four years, returning to Fort Carson, Colorado on 8 December 1970.
From May 18 to 26, 1967, Soldiers of 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division fought a series of five battles over a period of nine days in Pleiku province near the Cambodian border. American leadership wanted to fight infiltrating North Vietnamese as close to the Cambodian border as possible to prevent them from gaining a foothold in South Vietnam.
Camp Enari was established near Dragon Mountain (Núi Hàm Rồng) and Highway 19, 12 km southeast of Pleiku. The base was named for 1st Lieutenant Mark Enari, the first 4th Infantry Division member awarded the Silver Star (posthumously) in Vietnam, who was killed in action on 2 December 1966.
