Taken in the countryside manor of his grand benefactor, the Victorian aristocrat Sir Harald Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp), the penniless but brilliant entomologist, William Adamson (Mark Rylance), accepts an assistant position to catalogue his wealthy patron's specimen collection.
Returning to England in 1858, William is taken under the wing of Reverend Harold Alabaster, an amateur insect collector of great wealth who, like many educated men of his era, finds nature and naturalist.

In Victorian England, wealthy patriarch Sir Harald Alabaster invites an impoverished biologist, William Adamson, into his home. There, William tries to continue his work, but is distracted by Alabaster's seductive daughter, Eugenia.
After ten years on the Amazon and surviving a shipwreck in which most of his work is lost, naturalist William Adamson, now lacking a home and means of his own, is taken in by his benefactor, Sir Harald Alabaster, who hires William to assist him with the writing of a book, as well as to tutor the younger of the children in residence on his estate.
