On February 22 at 11 pm, due to pulmonary fibrosis leading to organ failure, Tung died in the hospital in the company of loved ones, at the age of 72. A funeral committee was set up and Tung's wake was held on March 13, 2006, at 4 pm at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

Known affectionately as Uncle Bill, Tung was married four times, and is survived by three sons, three daughters and 12 grandchildren. Jackie Chan offered condolences to Tung's family.
