The crew of the space station Meridian begins to see visions of loved ones or enemies that lure them to their deaths. After three crewmembers die, the remaining two (including Captain Clark) escape to Earth, where Clark is accused of murdering his crew.

Clark asks his ex-wife Robin Dysart to defend him before a military tribunal. The early portion of the hearing does not going in the captain's favour, as witness testimony and physical evidence appears to tie him to the murders. Robin manages to create reasonable doubt, offering a theory that there may have been a leak of the gas Siroxin. This leak could have caused an outbreak of mass hysteria, causing the crew members to kill themselves.

Against Robin's advice, Captain Clark testifies to what he experienced aboard the Meridian. He claims to have encountered an alien creature with psychic abilities, that can change its appearance and prey upon the weaknesses of others. He relates this to the old legends of sirens luring sailors to their deaths. The captain is unable to convince anyone of his version of events. He is cleared of responsibility of the deaths of the crew of the Meridian, as the tribunal chooses to accept Robin's explanation of a gas leak. Later the captain is visited in his cell by Dr. Dufour, who escaped the Meridian with him. She reveals herself to be the alien creature, and he assaults her. The captain is remanded to a mental health facility for evaluation, and Dr. Dufour expresses her intention to return to the Meridian.
