The park was given to the state in 1932 by L. J. and Lela Simpson, Coos County and the Cape Arago Park Commission. The original developments were carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, few of which remain.

In 1579, Sir Francis Drake is purported to have sought shelter for his ship, the Golden Hind, around Cape Arago. The headland was originally named Cape Gregory by James Cook on March 12, 1778 after Saint Gregory, the saint of that day; it was renamed Cape Arago after François Arago.
There are actually four parks on Cape Arago...Sunset Bay, Shore Acres, Simpson Reef, and Cape Arago. The first, Sunset Bay, is the most crowded and commercialized.

At the north end of the beach, a trailhead begins the 1.2-mile Lighthouse View Loop.This trail leads up the headland to reach great views of Sunset Bay, the twisted sandstone coastline to the south, and offshore islands, including Chief’s Island where the Cape Arago Lighthouse stands.

The park is a great area for hiking - the South Cove Trail and Simpson Reef Loop being two of the more popular options among visitors.
