  2. Visitors come to the isolated island for beaches, cycling, hiking, nature tours and birding, and the MyToi Gardens, a small Japanese garden created amidst the native brush. Two fire trucks are stationed on the island from Edgartown. Chappaquiddick Road and Poucha Road, both paved, provide access to sandy, woodland roads, trails, and shorelines.

  3. The only way to get to Chappaquiddick Island is by boat — there are no bridges here. While the island is tantalizingly close to Edgartown on the “mainland,” if you don’t have a boat of your own, you’ll need to take the Chappy Ferry across Edgartown Harbor. The Chappy Ferry, by the way, is hilarious.

  4. • Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse. Cape Poge Wildlife refuge is a barrier beach and salt marsh stretching for 8 miles along the eastern edge of Chappaquiddick.
    • Visit Chappaquiddick Beaches. East Beach (or Leland Beach) connects Cape Poge in the north to Wasque (pronounced Way-squee) in the south. You access the beach via Dike Bridge Chappaquiddick.
    • Wasque Reservation. This tranquil nature reserve is in the Southeastern part of Chappaquiddick and offers picturesque coastal views and walking trails.
    • Mytoi Japanese Gardens Chappaquiddick. Of all the Chappaquiddick things to do, this one is my top pick. Mytoi is located on the road to Cape Poge and East Beach.
  5. Martha's Vineyard. Accessed by frequent ferry (the 'Chappy Ferry') from Edgartown harbor, Chappaquiddick is a small island with a big history, thanks to a fatal accident in 1969 that involved Senator Ted Kennedy. The island's population is around 180; it's a popular spot with visitors for its beaches, cycling, hiking, fishing and birding.
