In 1527 King Henry VIII pursued a legal separation from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. He wanted to marry her lady-in-waiting Anne Boleyn instead—and hopefully produce a male heir. Divorce was contrary to the tenets of the Catholic church. So Henry asked the church for an annulment instead, on the grounds that the marriage was incestual.
