Nov 23, 2018 · You may not know there are several important steps a costume designer must go through before the costume hits the stage. 1.) Analysis: The first step is an analysis of the script, musical composition, choreography, etc. Costume parameters for the show are established and a rough costume plot is created.
The costume design process begins with studying the screenplay. Scripts describe the action (what happens in the scene), the time period (when the action takes place), the location (where the action takes place), and the characters in each scene.
In this lesson, students will reflect on their personal style, learn clothing vocabulary, and identify how to apply personal style to creating costumes for a show. They will also learn the difference between a costume designer and a costumer.
Students will explore, analyze and discuss the artistic styles, creative processes, and creations related to costume design. They will observe, discuss and make notes about themes, techniques, materials and colors used in specific creations.
LESSON 2 – Design a Costume OBJ: The student will design and present a costume design for a character in an opera using the artistic medium of their choice (sketch, painting, miniature model, etc.).
Objective: Students will be exposed to the world of costume design and the elements of visual design. They will learn, understand, and be able to recognize what costume design is, how it is used to tell a story, and what the basic principles are in its execution. WHAT IS COSTUME DESIGN? Costume designers create the look of each character by designing clothes and accessories the actors will wear in performance. Costumes may be made, bought, revamped out of the theatre’s existing collection or rented.
Consider what the costume needs to communicate about the character, the context and the style of the production to the audience. Refer to how you would use colour, fit, fabric, cut and the conditions of costume to communicate these to your audience.
