Spanish missionaries and soldiers inhabited the area in the 18th and early 19th centuries and named the location for its meadows (an archaic sense of the Spanish word monte).
El Monte is the oldest settlement in the San Gabriel Valley. Our 5,000-square-foot space is filled with unusual artifacts celebrating our heritage. The Museum curator and docents provide guided tours through the museum while sharing El Monte's rich history.
