Freedom Road by Howard Fast is a very well written, powerful, historical fiction book. It is set during the reconstruction of the South directly after the Civil War and takes place in South Carolina. Gideon Jackson is a former slave and was elected by the plantation members to represent them in the South Carolina Legislature.
