His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, McSweeney's, and GQ. He also contributed a weekly column, "American Psyche", to The Guardian 's weekend magazine between 2006 and 2008.

Saunders was born in Amarillo, Texas, and grew up in Chicago. He received a B.S. from the Colorado School of Mines in 1981 and an M.F.A. from Syracuse University in 1988.
