Jan 15, 2020 · To figure out the length of the dotted note, you multiply the original note length by 1.5. So if the symbol is a one beat note, a dot next to it means to play it for one-and-a-half beats (1 x 1.5 = 1.5). If a dot is next to a half note (two beats), it now lasts for three beats (2 x 1.5 = 3).

Fretting-hand fingering is indicated with 1 for the index finger, 2 the middle, 3 the ring, 4 the pinky, and T the thumb. Picking-hand fingering is indicated by i for the index finger, m the middle, a the ring, c the little finger, and p the thumb.
- Numbers in a Circle. Numbers (1 to 6) in a small circle refer to the string on which you should play the note. We can use letters or number to denote the guitar string names.

Guitar Tab Symbols: Muting & Palm-Muting (Difficulty: Intermediate) String muting is a technique often found in funk music and other rhythm-based genres. The guitar tab symbols used for this technique are simply an X where the fret number would normally be. We may also see a set of six X’s across the entire tab to indicate muting of all strings.

In formal Guitar TAB, a number is given at the top of the curved arrow to tell us what type of bend to play. ‘1/2’ means a half-step bend, ‘full’ means a whole-step bend, ‘1 1/2’ means a one-and-a-half step bend and so on.
