Israeli airstrikes in West Bank kill nine, including Hamas commander
Reuters Videos4 hours agoSTORY: An Israeli airstrike in the occupied West Bank killed a Hamas commander and four Islamic Jihad fighters on Saturday, the militant groups' media said. And the Israeli military said it had also killed four more gunmen in a separate strike. The Israeli military said the first airstrike hit a vehicle near the city of Tulkarm, targeting a militant cell it said was on its way to carry out an attack. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad groups claimed the other four men involved there as its fighters. Hours later, a second Israeli strike targeted another group of armed militants, who Israel's military says, had fired on troops. It added that forces had killed four more gunmen in that strike, during what it described as a counter-terrorism operation in Tulkarm. The Palestinian Health Ministry said five men had been killed in the first strike and news agency WAFA said four people died in the second. Violence in the West Bank was rising before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began on October 7 - and it has continued to do so. Israel's military regularly undertake raids in the territory, claimed by Palestinians as part of a future state. Region-wide tensions soared this week, after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on Wednesday. Hamas and Iran both accused Israel of carrying out his assassination and pledged to retaliate. Israel neither claimed nor denied responsibility for the incident. Haniyeh's death is one in a series of recent killings of senior Hamas figures, as the war in Gaza between the Palestinian militants and Israel rolls towards its 11th month. On Thursday, Israel's military said it killed the head of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, in an airstrike on Gaza last month. Hamas has not confirmed or denied his death.

It’s very hard to speculate, and I’ve learned over many years, never to speculate on the impact one event may have on something else. So I can’t tell you what this means. I can tell you that the imperative of getting a ceasefire, the importance that that has for everyone remains, and we will continue to labour that for as long as it takes to get there.” ::Singapore “It’s vitally important to help end the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. It’s vitally important in getting the hostages home, including a number of Americans. It’s vitally important to hopefully putting things on a better path, for enduring peace, for enduring security. So that focus remains.” "The best way to bring the temperature down everywhere, and to put us on a better path, is through a ceasefire in Gaza. That will have, I think, important effects on other areas where you could see conflict, whether it’s in the north of Israel and Lebanon, whether it’s Iran, whether it’s in the Red Sea with the Houthis. So that’s why the focus on the ceasefire needs to remain and for us it will very much remain on that." Iran's Revolutionary Guards confirmed Haniyeh’s death in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday, hours after he attended a swearing-in ceremony for the country's new president. Blinken, who has been in Asia since late last week, said a ceasefire and the release of hostages being held in Gaza was crucial and the United States would do everything to make that happen.3 days ago

- 2:04Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh killed in Iran, group saysReuters VideosSTORY: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday (July 31). That's according to Iranian media, who also say he was staying at "a special residence for war veterans in north Tehran." Hamas called the strike a “severe escalation” that would not achieve its goals. A senior Hamas official claimed Israel was responsible, though Israel gave no immediate comment. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed Haniyeh’s death in Tehran – only hours after he attended a swearing in ceremony for the country’s new president. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned the killing of the Hamas leader in comments reported by Iran state media. Meanwhile U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he was seeking to cool rising tensions in the region. “I don’t think war is inevitable. I maintain that. I think there’s always room and opportunities for diplomacy and I’d like to see parties pursue those opportunities” However, Austin also said the United States would help defend Israel if it were attacked. The news comes less than 24 hours after Israel claimed to have killed the Hezbollah commander it said was behind a deadly strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, complicating chances for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters it is a grave escalation intended to undermine Hamas’s resolve, adding that the group are “confident of victory”. Haniyeh, who is normally based in Qatar, has been the the face of Hamas' international diplomacy as the war set off by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 has raged in Gaza, where three of his sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Appointed as Hamas's leader in 2017, he often travelled between Turkey and Qatar for ceasefire talks or to talk to Hamas ally Iran. The International Criminal Court prosecutor's office requested an arrest warrant for him over alleged war crimes at the same time it issued a similar request against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.3 days ago

We are prepared to manage tensions and engage in dialogue with governments that have not yet understood Iran's dignity and position." "We will pursue constructive and effective interaction with the world based on dignity, wisdom, and expediency," Pezeshkian, a relative moderate, told a parliament session attended by foreign dignitaries and broadcast live on state television. His victory has lifted hopes of a thaw in Iran's antagonistic relations with the West that might create openings for defusing its nuclear standoff with world powers. But Pezeshkian takes office at a time of escalating Middle East tensions over Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza and cross-border fighting with Iran's ally Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran, which backs the groups that describe themselves as the "Axis of Resistance" to Israel and U.S. influence in the Middle East, has accused the United States of supporting what it calls Israeli crimes in Gaza. "Those who supply weapons that kill children cannot teach Muslims about humanity," Pezeshkian said to chants of "Death to America," and "Death to Israel."
