Sony and Philips created the technical standard that defines the format of a CD-ROM in 1983, in what came to be called the Yellow Book. The CD-ROM was announced in 1984 and introduced by Denon and Sony at the first Japanese COMDEX computer show in 1985.
A CD-ROM drive uses a low-power laser beam to read digitized data that has been encoded in the form of tiny pits on an optical disk. The drive then feeds the data to a computer for processing. The standard compact disc was introduced in 1982 for digital audio reproduction.
