Apr 25, 1993 · WASHINGTON -- Joy Dirksen Baker, daughter of one Senate Republican leader and wife of another, has died at the age of 64, her husband's Washington law firm said Sunday.
Everett McKinley Dirksen (January 4, 1896 – September 7, 1969) was an American politician. A Republican, he represented Illinois in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. As Senate Minority Leader from 1959 until his death in 1969, he played a highly visible and key role in the politics of the 1960s.
He married his first wife, Danice Joy Dirksen, who the daughter of former Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen in 1951. Together, they had two daughters. After she died of cancer on April 24, 1993, Baker then married U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum, daughter of Kansas Governor Alf Landon, on December 7, 1996.
