Lake Chapala from space, 1994. Lake Chapala (Spanish: Lago de Chapala, ⓘ) has been Mexico's largest freshwater lake ever since the desiccation of Lake Texcoco.. It borders both the states of Jalisco and Michoacán, being located within the municipalities of Ocotlán, Chapala, Jocotepec, Poncitlán, and Jamay, in Jalisco, and in Venustiano Carranza and Cojumatlán de Régules, in Michoacán.
Chapala’s municipal park, La Cristiania, has six tennis courts, available for a nominal fee. Its large public swimming pool is complemented with picnic areas, a basketball court, two volleyball nets and a children’s playground. Across the street from the park, east of the pier, is the Chapala Yacht Club. View Larger Map.
- Walk the Malecon. The maleconor boardwalks along any of the village waterfronts are full of life, lovers, color and good things to eat. Chapala has a lovely malecon with tiendas or little shops selling their wares, as well as people pushing carts with homemade ice cream, fresh cocos(coconuts) they will crack open with machetes for you.
- Mezcala Island. Never conquered by the Spanish, the Indians managed to keep their small, sacred island from being overtaken for four years much to the Spaniards chagrin.
- The waterfalls at Tepalo: The waterfalls in Ajijic flow during the rainy season and are a popular hiking destination. Bring a backpack with water and a small picnic.
- Live Music and Dancing. A favorite pastime at Lake Chapala is listening to live music. I’ve spoken with people who have said they could dance every night of the week because of all the great options we have!

Aug 15, 2021 · Lake Chapala has two islands: Mezcala Island (the Mexican Alcatraz) and Isla de Los Alacranes. The latter is so-called because it has a shape similar to that of a scorpion (alacran). Mezcala Island hosts a Spanish fortress and prison from the 16th century. That’s why it is known as the Mexican Alcatraz.
