Lake Erie ( / ˈɪəri / EER-ee; French: Lac Érié) is the fourth-largest lake by surface area of the five Great Lakes in North America and the eleventh-largest globally. It is the southernmost, shallowest, and smallest by volume of the Great Lakes and also has the shortest average water residence time.

The ancient lake was similar in size to the current lake during glacial retreat, but for some period the eastern half of the lake was covered with ice.

Bordered by Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, Lake Erie has 856 miles of shoreline, giving it a surface area of just over 9,900 square.
