Larry Mitchell is a tribal member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation located near Mayetta, Kansas. In 1969, Mitchell dropped out of high school and volunteered for the United States Army. He served a combat tour of duty with Delta Company, 2/501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division from November 1969-November 1970.
