Maurice Braun. 1877-1941. Considered one of California’s preeminent impressionists, Maurice Braun spent his childhood in New York City, having moved there with his family in 1881.
Jul 1, 1977 · In 1909 an established New York figure and portrait painter, Braun, found portrait painting too constraining artistically and came to California to escape the influence of other artists working in the area.
Braun was an established portrait and figure painter in New York before moving to San Diego in 1910. After opening a studio on Point Loma, he founded the San Diego Academy of Art in 1912 and served as its director for many years.
Maurice Braun was an American artist who holds a high place in the early California school of Impressionism. He was born on October 1, 1877 in Nagy Bittse, which then, was within the boundaries of Hungary and now is a resort in Czechoslovakia.

As an early California artist Braun was inspired to interpret its natural landscape. Southern California offered many new challenges.
