     This surprises me since both the setProperty(...) and getProperty(...) are synchronized:

     if (Boolean.parseBoolean(System.getProperty(key)) { ...}-

     • Is there a possibility that the threads are using a different value of key ? How do they get that value? Is it a final static constant?
     • Maybe the threads not testing for the value appropriately? You should be doing something like this: if (Boolean.parseBoolean(System.getProperty(key)) { ...}

     System testing will likely need to be done via the UI. This gives you two options:

     1) You can manually conduct the test cases by clicking on elements. 2) You can automate the test cases by programming against the UI. There are plenty of commercial tools to do this or you can use a programming framework like the Microsoft UI Automation Framework. These tend to use the accessibility APIs built into Windows to access your UI.

     Whether you go the manual or automated route depends on how many times you will be running the tests. If you are just going to run them once or twice, don't spend the time automating. You will never earn it back. If you are going to run them often, automating can be very handy.

     A word of caution: Automating the UI isn't hard, but it is very brittle. If the application is changing a lot, the tests will require a lot of maintenance.

     In order to hook both 32-bit and 64-bit processes you need to make sure that:

     • You have 32-bit DLL to hook 32-bit processes and 64-bit DLL to hook 64-bit processes
     • SetWindowsHookEx() is invoked from 32-bit code to hook 32-bit processes and from 64-bit code to hook 64-bit processes.

     The latter basically means that you have to create both 32-bit and 64-bit executable that both call SetWindowsHookEx(), providing 32-bit and 64-bit DLL respectively as an hMod parameter.

     If you application is 32-bit, you will have to spawn 64-bit process that will call SetWindowsHookEx() and probably do nothing else until you unhook. Note that Windows will automatically unset hook when/if this process exits/terminates, so it has to remain alive all the time you need the hooks, probably, the whole lifetime you your application - in this case you can make your 64-bit process WaitForSingleObject() until your main application process exits/terminates and unhook and exit after WaitForSingleObject() completes.
