The seven different types of eczema include atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, neurodermatitis, nummular eczema, and stasis dermatitis.
The difference between eczema and dermatitisis that eczema refers to a group of skin conditions, while dermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin. Dermatitis may be a symptom of some types of eczema. However, eczema usually also causes other symptoms, such as dry, itchy, and cracked skin lesions.
Several different things may trigger eczema, such as environmental irritants, allergens, and pollutants, stress, certain foods and drinks, smoking, some medications, and certain medical conditions.

- Atopic Dermatitis. This is the most severe and long-lasting form of eczema. It’s characterized by inflamed skin that may crack and release a clear fluid when scratched (an effect known as “weeping”).
- Contact Dermatitis (Irritant or Allergic) This is a localized skin reaction to a substance in the environment that causes the skin to become red and itchy, according to the National Eczema Association.
- Hand Eczema. Sometimes mistaken for dry skin, this form of eczema produces dry, thick, scaly patches on the hands that may crack and bleed. Like contact eczema, hand eczema is triggered by various irritants and allergens.
- Dyshidrotic Eczema. Marked by small blisters on the hands and feet, especially the fingers, palms, and soles, dyshidrotic eczema can be very itchy and will often disrupt sleep and work time.
- Stasis dermatitis. Common symptoms of stasis dermatitis are: Thickened, discolored skin on the ankles or shins. Itching. Open sores, perhaps with oozing and crusting.
- Allergic contact dermatitis. Common symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis are: Itchiness. Bumps and blisters, sometimes with oozing and crusting.
- Atopic dermatitis. Common symptoms of atopic dermatitis are: Dry, cracked skin. Itchiness. Raw skin from scratching. Small, raised bumps, on brown or Black skin.
- Irritant contact dermatitis. Common symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis are: Itchiness. Bumps and blisters, sometimes with oozing and crusting.
