The county was named for the historic city of Pueblo which took its name from the Spanish language word meaning "town" or "village".

Pueblo County, named for an early trading post called El Pueblo, was established in 1861 as one of the original seventeen counties of the Colorado Territory. Pueblo County covers 2,398 square miles in southeast Colorado, from the southern Front Range and Wet Mountains in the west to the Arkansas River valley and Great Plains in the east.
Pueblo County is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, 100 miles south of Denver, along Interstate 25 and US Highway 50. Three hundred days of sunshine each year plus the flow of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek provide rich agricultural land and ample recreational activities.
