Jul 24, 2020 · The only free RPG Maker was really VX Ace Lite. They have the older versions available legally now, but they are still paid software. It's probably worth noting that the preorder promotion for MZ includes a free copy of MV so if you have any friends who rpgmake and are planning on upgrading, they might actually have a key to spare.
Trial versions are available on the first page of the official website: https://www.rpgmakerweb.com/free-trials. Each test lasts 20 days. I bought all of them, except VX, years ago, for very low prices through Steam, which for me is much more convenient than having to enter the purchase code.
