Salem is an independent city in Virginia, USA, bordered by the city of Roanoke to the east but otherwise adjacent to Roanoke County. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24,802 according to 2010 U.S. Census.

With the addition of South Salem in 1953 and an eastern tract in 1960, Salem was the largest town in Virginia with a population of over 16,000. A few years later, the threat of annexation by nearby Roanoke City prompted Salem's council to pursue city status.
