As an actor, you will develop your capacity to bring body, voice, and spirit together in ways both personal and transformative, while exploring material that ranges from the texts of Shakespeare and Chekhov to exciting new works—in the classroom, on stage, and also on film.
- The Juilliard School. New York City. At Juilliard, undergrad and graduate students study together in a conservatory-style program that trains them to work within the industry and to “stretch their generative muscles and create work for themselves,” says Evan Yionoulis, dean and director of the drama program.
- Yale University. New Haven, Connecticut. The David Geffen School of Drama at Yale remains tuition-free for the 15 to 17 acting grad students who are accepted yearly, thanks to the $150 million gift bestowed on the school by the business magnate in June 2021.
- University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The undergraduate program at UNC School of the Arts, which provides conservatory-level training across five disciplines, has recently made a number of new hires and added courses such as playwriting and micro-budget producing for film and television.
- Brown/Trinity Rep. Providence, Rhode Island. The Ivy League school accepts 12 students a year into its drama grad program, which is affiliated with the regional Trinity Repertory Company theater.

- Bennington College (Bennington, VT) Courtesy Bennington College. Collaboration is key in Bennington’s drama department, which is built around the idea that there’s no “right” way to study the craft.
- Boston University (Boston, MA) Surabhi Surendra/Shutterstock. If you’re undecided about what type of acting degree you want to pursue, BU’s School of Theatre is a good choice.
- Brown University (Providence, RI) Ken Wolter/Shutterstock. Brown’s Department of Theatre Arts & Performance Studies aims to give its students a well-rounded understanding of drama as a discipline.
- California Institute of the Arts (Santa Clarita, CA) vesperstock/Shutterstock. Nicknamed the “Juilliard of the West,” CalArts is considered to be one of the most prestigious acting schools in the country.
- Yale School of Drama. Yale produces more Oscar nominations than just about any other school (it's easy when 20-time nominee Meryl Streep is an alum!). Paul Newman, Sigourney Weaver, Frances McDormand and Angela Bassett all passed through its campus (and affiliated Yale Repertory Theatre) on their way to becoming screen icons.
- Juilliard. Its MFA program is a relative toddler — just launched in 2012 — but Juilliard's undergrad drama division has been molding the talents of superstars (including Viola Davis, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver) since 1968.
- NYU Tisch School of the Arts. There's no question this school produces a dizzying number of notable alums: Christopher Guest, Debra Messing, Peter Krause and Moonlight Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, to name a few.
- Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. If you're thinking about leaving the U.S. for a couple of years — and these days, who isn't? — then you're unlikely to find a better training ground than this 113-year-old London institution, where the classical education leans on "heightened text" (think Shakespeare and Greek tragedy) over contemporary drama.

Actors come to Juilliard to strengthen their capacity for expression in both body and voice, to practice bringing vulnerability and empathy to their understanding of character, and to develop an approach to storytelling that includes careful attention to text and engagement with the world.
