Containing honorable echoes of Eastwood, Tarantino, the Coens, and John Hillcoat (whose films The Proposition and The Road easily spring to mind here), John Maclean's Slow West unfolds as an endearing, neatly-packaged, modestly-paced Wild West poem.

With a strong visual, graphic novel-style approach, there aren't many actual "characters" present in Slow West, just an infectious gathering of archetypes and eccentricities. Michael Fassbender deftly inhabits the gruff, dying-breed outlaw while The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee plays his naive, lovelorn traveling companion. No actual locations are ever given, just the year and the direction. 1870. West. As Smit-McPhee's Jay longs to once again lay eyes on his love, Rose (Caren Pistorius), who was forced flee Scotland with her father (Game of Thrones' Rory McCann). Jay's now made the trek overseas to reunite with Rose and, during the last stretch of his journey, chooses to pay a gunslinger, Fassbender's Silas, to shepherd him through the final stretch. Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smit-McPhee in Slow West. What follows is a road movie, complete with bizarre sights, colorful characters, gorgeous surroundings and occasional outbursts of violence. As with most modern westerns, time is spent meditating on human nature and the dichotomy between the beautiful, vast landscape and the shocking savagery that it sows. Silas and Jay's pairing very much represents the pessimist/optimist dynamic, with Silas often speaking in apathetic vagueisms (he's fond of saying "Let's drift" when it's time to mount up) while Jay clings closely to his poet's heart, believing that living's more than just surviving.

Ben Mendelsohn pops in every now and again as the fur-coated Payne - the leader of Silas' old running pack (a strange assortment of frontier rejects in their own right). And Mendelsohn does what Mendelsohn does best (and recently did to an expert level on Netflix's Bloodline), which is act like a smooth-talking walking virus. A stalking wolf in human form. His spare presence makes Slow West even more captivating, as the film's collection of lethal oddballs converges on an isolated homestead in the final act for a symphony of gunfire and bloodshed.

Slow West is currently available on DirecTV and hits theaters and VOD on May 15.

Like most post-Unforgiven westerns, Slow West is a "genre ender." As in, I can't imagine first time writer/director John Maclean making another western after this, as the film's designed to contain and convey everything there is to say about the western style and brand. It's a small-but-forceful film about the aesthetics of the genre, filled with s...
