So you picked up Project X Zone and one of the first things you notice is it's nothing like your normal tactical RPG. Well, below is some useful information about the rather unique combat in this game, information on stats, characters and just some all round helpful tips to get you on your way.

Almost immediately noticeable, is the difference in combat from a traditional turn based strategy game. Here, when you engage an enemy, it brings you into a battle screen where you enter button commands more akin to a fighter like Street Fighter. You have a varying amount of attacks you can do each round and at the end if the enemy is dead you gain experience points and the enemy is removed from the map. If during the battle you do not kill the enemy, you still gain some experience but the enemy can then attack you with a counter, or during his own turn.

Knowing your characters plays an important role in combat in this game. Different attacks have different attributes attached to them. During a round of combat, a player can do a minimum of 3 attacks, which grows up to five as a unit levels up. Normally, it would make sense to use each of your attacks once, as this is going to give you the best spread of damage and it allows you to make a fourth attack.

The order of these attacks can change the damage you do however and depending on what you want from a battle, the attacks you use can help you or hinder you towards a specific goal. For instance, if you are low on XP, you should use your three basic attacks, and on the fourth bonus action, use whatever attack you have that gives you the most XP after it's use. If you are looking for pure damage, your fourth attack should be an ability with a high Strength rating or perhaps a bonus CRT (critical strike chance). It is a subtle difference but as the game goes on and you begin unlocking more attacks, these options become more important as you must decide between dealing damage or building up that precious XP.

Also, pay close attention to certain units that have attacks that can rip through an enemy's shield gauge, such as Chun-Li & Morrigan's "Focus Attack & Finishing Shower" and Ryu & Ken's "Shinku T. Shinpukyaku/Senpuu Kyaku & Shroyuken (S)". During later stages, some enemies start having very large shield gauges and awareness of units with these kinds of moves will prove crucial in maintaining your usual damage. Your best strategy is to use the move first, then, if you so desire, time when to call in your support/solo unit to help dish out the pain.

At first this may seem confusing, as XP is usually used as a shorthand version of Experience, but it will make sense quite quickly. Experience points are gained after every battle and work your character towards their next level up. In game, the shortened version is EXP.

XP or XP% (Pronounced Cross Points) is your special attack gauge. This is charged by completing moves during battle or using an item and is depleted by doing certain, more powerful attacks, using skills or reviving allies. XP has no use outside of those purposes and does not contribute towards levels or character progression. So don't worry, your character isn't losing experience when he/she pummels the enemy into oblivion with that flashy special move.

Unlike many tactical games, Project X Zone features a very active combat system. At first glance you may think that button mashing will always lead to success, but there are actually deeper systems at play that, if mastered early will pay of later quite well. The first piece of this is landing involves long combos. Every attack in the game knocks the enemy off the ground. While they are off the ground, a combo counter will build up. If the enemy falls back to the ground the combo is broken. Your goal then, is to attack rapidly enough to keep the combo going. This is typically not that hard, just ensure you have your next attack ready the moment the first ends. Your reward for long combos? More XP. The bigger the combo, the more bonus XP you get at the end of the battle.

Unlike many RPGs, Critical Hits are not based on a stat in this title. Instead, it is about player timing during combat. To initiate a crit, a player must land an attack milliseconds before the enemy unit hits the ground after a previous attack. The timing has to be very precise and it grows more difficult due to the sheer number of attacks the pla...

In battle, sometimes you may notice the game prompting you to hit L or R. This is because you have allies ready to assist you during combat. Solo Attacks are available if you have a third unit with your party. These characters unlock slowly, so not every unit will have this option. You can use them in every battle, and you should as they will deal additional damage and make Cross Hits available. Support Attacks are usable if you engage in combat with an enemy, while an ally unit is adjacent to your character. It is important to note the ally must be next to your character, not the enemy. This Support Attack will help deal more damage and again, unlock a Cross Hit.

    Xzone3.jpg

So what is a Cross Hit? While a Solo Attack or Support Attack is going on, your normal character is still able to attack. If you do so, the two attacks will combine into a Cross Hit. During a Cross Hit, your XP% gauge can fill up beyond 100%. Overcharging your gauge like this allows for more skills to be used the next turn, more defensive options or lets the player use a Special Attack while still having extra XP after.

Another effect of Cross Hits is that they hold the enemy in place should attacks from two different types of units collide ( Pair & Solo, Pair & Support, and/or Solo & Support) making dealing damge easier without having to worry about juggling messing you up. Be careful though, as Cross Hits are double edged swords. If you get a Cross Hit very close to the top of the screen, for example, then all ground level and mid height attacks will miss. A similar event will occur if it's caught in the dead middle, which all ground level and high-in-the-air attacks will miss. Problems like this can occur if you bring in a unit like Zhephyr & Leanne with Heihachi, where the former performs many air based attacks and the latter performs mid to ground level attacks Check the units being brought into a battle phase and plan when to call in for help to deal maximum damage.

One thing you might notice quickly is that certain characters do far more damage than others. This is intentional of course, as each set of characters has their own stats. Ryu & Ken are quite strong and will take down foes easily while Frank & Hsien Ko are weaker. These weaker characters aren't necessarily designed to be in every fight and players ...
