Xavier University (/ ˈ z eɪ v j ər / ZAY-vyure) is a private Jesuit university in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is the sixth-oldest Catholic and fourth-oldest Jesuit university in the United States. Xavier has an undergraduate enrollment of 4,860 students and graduate enrollment of 1,269 students.
In 1840, Bishop John Baptist Purcell asked the Society of Jesus to take control of the school and the Jesuits changed the name to St. Xavier College to reflect the school's patron saint. Xavier University was the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the State of Ohio.
Jesuits changed the school’s name to St. Xavier College in honor of St. Francis Xavier, one of the early companions of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, and a famous missionary to India and other countries of the Far East.
