   Thomas Middleton, son of Henry and Mary Williams Middleton was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1753. Members of the Middleton family were wealthy merchants and planters and prominent in South Carolina politics from the late seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries.

   Henry Augustus Middleton (1793-1887), a Charleston and St. George Parish, S.C. attorney and plantation owner, was the son of Thomas Middleton (1753-1797). He studied law but turned from that occupation to the management of his large land holdings in South Carolina and Newport (R.I.).

When the family traveled away from both homes, the domestic slaves staying at the Charleston house could be hired out for special dinners and such.    • Many descendants of slaves worked for the Smiths in the house and gardens. In 2006 there was a reunion of people with ties to Middleton Place—black and white. Three hundred people attended. Middleton descendent Mason Smith said it was “good to be together with others from whom we had traditionally been separated by law and custom.”
