Once infamous for being Hong Kong's red-light district, Wan Chai has shaken off much of its seedy reputation and evolved into a bustling neighbourhood.
Wan Chai is situated at the western part of Wan Chai District on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong. Its other boundaries are Canal Road to the east, Arsenal Street to the west and Bowen Road to the south.
Best explored on foot, Wan Chai District offers a wealth of heritage hideaways and modern hot spots — be they nightlife, dining, shopping or cultural — that make it an essential stop for any visitor.
Wan Chai is on Hong Kong island and is in between the Admiralty and Causeway Bay districts. It is one of Hong Kong's oldest commercial and residential centers and in the distant past was also home to a number of dockyards. The dockyards have all gone and were swallowed up by land reclamation.
