The Wichita Mountains are rocky promontories and rounded hills made of red and black igneous rocks, light-colored sedimentary rocks, and boulder conglomerates. The Wichita Mountains were formed in four distinct geologic episodes following a failed continental rift.
- Visit Quanah Parker Dam. For an easy, quick stop in the Wichita Mountains, head to Quanah Parker Dam! Named after the last chief of the Quahadi Comanche tribe, this dam was built during the 1930s as part of the Great Depression’s Work Project Administration program.

- Watch the sunset from Mount Scott. One of our favorite experiences in the Wichita Mountains was watching the sunset from Mount Scott. Mount Scott sits at 2,464 feet, making it one of the tallest mountains in the park.
