The Detective: Directed by Robert Hamer. With Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood, Peter Finch, Cecil Parker. Works of art are disappearing, stolen by a master thief, a master of disguise. Father Brown has two goals: to catch the thief and to save his soul.
New York City police detective Joe Leland is called to the home of a murder victim who has been beaten to death, head crushed, and has had his genitals removed. Puzzled and disgusted, the police on call are left bemused, and Leland holds things together with his direct, no-nonsense approach.
The Detective. "The Detective" contains a fine performance by Frank Sinatra, some very good scenes of police work, and not much else. It is a potentially excellent movie struggling to free itself from a heavy-handed script by Abby Mann and mediocre direction by Gordon Douglas.
