From 1955 on, Staudte was a corresponding member of the GDR's Akademie der Künste, and in 1966/67, he worked as a lecturer at DFFB. Wolfgang Staudte died on January 19, 1984, from heart failure in Zigarski, Slovenia, during the shooting of the five-part TV movie "Der eiserne Weg".
