Alan Shulman (4 June 1915 – 10 July 2002) was an American composer and cellist. He wrote a considerable amount of symphonic music, chamber music, and jazz music. Trumpeter Eddie Bailey said, "Alan had the greatest ear of any musician I ever came across. He had better than perfect pitch. I've simply never met anyone like him."
American composer, cellist and arranger Alan Shulman was born in Baltimore, June 4, 1915. Shulman’s early studies were with Bart Wirtz (cello) and Louis Cheslock (harmony) at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1928 the family moved to Brooklyn where Alan played in the National Orchestral Association under Leon Barzin.
Cellist, composer and and arranger Alan Shulman had a life steeped in the musical history of New York City. A charter member of Arturo Toscanini’s NBC Symphony, he was also a founder of the Symphony of the Air, Stuyvesant String Quartet, New Friends of Rhythm and the Violoncello Society.

Jul 13, 2002 · Alan Shulman, a composer and cellist whose works were performed by orchestras, chamber groups and jazz ensembles, died on Wednesday at a nursing home in Hudson, N.Y. He was 86.
Alan Shulman was a founder of the Symphony of the Air (1954), and the Violoncello Society (1956). He was the Society's President from 1967 until 1972. In the 1950s, Shulman wrote popular songs with entertainer Steve Allen and arranged for Skitch Henderson, Raoul Poliakin and Felix Slatkin.
