Nov 8, 2014 · During his term in Congress Carey authored the bill to admit Wyoming to statehood. Carey was rewarded for his efforts by being elected the first U.S. Senator from Wyoming on November 12, 1890. He served as U.S. Senator from December 1, 1890 to March 3, 1895.

Joseph Maull Carey (January 19, 1845 – February 5, 1924) was an American lawyer, rancher, judge, and politician, who was active in Wyoming local, state, and federal politics. In the 1860s, Carey practiced law in the eastern United States and participated in Pennsylvania and New Jersey politics.
Dr. Carey is an associate professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His specialty is microvascular surgery, with a focus on breast reconstruction, complex reconstructive surgery, thoracic and abdominal reconstruction, and cerebral revascularization procedures.
