Elizabeth Monroe ( née Kortright; June 30, 1768 – September 23, 1830) was the first lady of the United States from 1817 to 1825, as the wife of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States.
Elizabeth Monroe, however, spent much of her time in New York with her sisters and their families. Four years later, when Monroe was named U.S. Minister to France, they relocated to Paris. Elizabeth Monroe was immediately fond of the city and its people, and she was well-received there by both the local and diplomatic communities.
