Ourense (Galician: [owˈɾɛnsɪ]; Spanish: Orense) is a province of Spain, in the southeastern part of the autonomous community of Galicia. It is bordered by the provinces of Pontevedra to the west, Lugo to the north, León and Zamora , (which both belong to Castile and León ) to the east, and by Portugal to the south.
History. The origin of the town can be traced to the Romans and the presence of hot springs called the Burgas. These can still be seen today. There was also the need to fortify the place to protect one of the easiest ways to cross the Miño River.

In the 5th century, in the midst of the decline of the Roman Empire, the Suebi, a Germanic people mainly agricultural, arrived in Galicia and founded a kingdom whose capital was Ourense. During the reign of Chararic began the construction of the first cathedral (now disappeared) in honour of Saint Martin of Tours, since then patron of the city.
