Lindy Hop today is danced as a social dance, as a competitive dance, as a performance dance, and in classes, workshops, and camps. Partners may dance alone or together, with improvisation a central part of social dancing and many performance and competition pieces.

Yes, Lindy is a partnered dance with a “lead” and “follow.” But unlike ballroom dances, Lindy Hop is casual and conversational — meaning that both partners learn to improvise and play off one another.
At its heart, lindy hop is all about social dancing – after all, that’s how it was created! Although going to classes is great, once you have a beginner course under your belt we highly encourage you to come out social dancing as well.
The Lindy Hop, an authentic Afro-Euro-American swing dance that drew on African and European dance traditions, emerged as one of many popular dances during this time. It was influenced by the Charleston, jazz and tap steps, ballet, and complex movements from the Viennese Waltz.
