The Madonna Inn is a motel in San Luis Obispo, California. Opened for business in 1958, it quickly became a landmark on the Central Coast of California. It is noted for its unique decor, pink dining room, and themed rooms. It was created by Alex Madonna, a successful construction magnate and entrepreneur (d. April 2004), and his wife Phyllis.
For over 50 years (which is ancient history in American time) the Madonna Inn has been welcoming travelers with its eccentric and luxurious take on the essential roadside Motel. Choose from 110 themed rooms from “Caveman” to “Elegance”, “Jungle Rock” to “Bridal Falls”.
Many people have asked for a history of Madonna Inn, so with this brief story, we will attempt to tell you how it all began. The first 12 rooms were completed December 24, 1958, and were given complementary for that night’s stay, to a very surprised group of travelers.
